The Avignon antique market beside Fort Saint-André

Not in Avignon, technically. Across the river, in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, where the ground rises and the old fort sits pale against the hill. That's where the market is, roadside, a parking lot turned market for one morning a week.

Saturday. About fifty stalls, give or take, and an easy mix of people. Some clearing out an attic, a table of odds and no real theme to it. Others clearly dealers, curated and priced like it, a few of whom pressed a card into our hands on the way past, warehouses nearby that stay open through the week if you want more of what you saw on the table.

Prices were fair throughout, though the dealers ask more than the attic-clearers do, which is only right. Nobody was trying to hide that.

Park right beside it, which after L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue felt like a small miracle. Easy, unhurried, the kind of market you can properly see in an hour or two rather than a whole morning. Good, too, if whoever you're with isn't planning to spend all day wandering.

We came for the fort. Stayed for the market. That order might say something.
