Antique Latoen Mirrors

Quietly elegant and full of history, these antique latoen mirrors date from the late 19th century, during the Napoleon III period. Each one is unique — shaped by hand, finished in fine latoen (a thin brass-like metal), and mellowed beautifully over time.

Often referred to as Huguenot mirrors, they carry a touch of intrigue: legend has it that French Protestants once hid their Bibles behind mirrors like these to keep them safe from the king’s soldiers. Whether the story is myth or memory, it adds a poetic layer to their already rich past.

Their warm, softly golden patina reflects light with subtle depth, making them as practical as they are beautiful. Some feature a small hinged shutter — occasionally still holding the original brush.

Perfect in hallways, bathrooms or above a console, latoen mirrors bring that rare blend of history and restraint: a glow that feels at once old-world and effortless in modern interiors.
